A series of recent daytime burglaries has occurred on side streets in the Dupont area, according to a post on Dupont Forum. Three of these incidents occurred on the 1700 block of Swann Street NW. On November 26, a home was burglarized through a fenced back yard accessed from an alley.
A similar incident occurred on December 13, but the suspect fled after being seen in the back yard. He was described as an African-American male about 30 years old and 6-feet tall. A third incident on December 26 also involved entry through the alley.
On December 20, a suspect burglarized a home in the 1700 block of Riggs Place NW from a fenced back yard. It is not clear if these incidents are related, but residents in these areas should take extra precautions to avoid being burglarized.
Burglary Prevention Tips
The Metropolitan Police Department has a number of burglary prevention tips on its website. These include making sure that all doors have a deadbolt lock, and that accessible windows and sliding glass doors are well-secured. Residents should also avoid hiding spare keys outside their home. Doors should also be made of metal or solid wood and fit tightly in the frame.
Residents with backyards should maintain their fence and install motion sensor lighting. The yard should also be kept clean and shrubberies should be pruned to make it more difficult for someone to break in without being seen.
Overall, burglaries were down about 7 percent citywide in 2012 compared to 2011.
