MPD 2nd District Has New Commander

You can see the new commander’s resume in his own words at the city’s website here. Michael Reese has replaced Matthew Klein at 2D; Klein has go to the MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau. Police Service Area (PSA) 208, which includes Dupont-Kalorama, is in 2D.

Supreme Court Declines to Review DC’s Same-Sex Marriage Law

The Washington Post reports the Supreme Court declined to hear a case brought by opponents of the marriage law, upholding the D.C. Appeals Court decision. The lawsuit was intended to bring a referendum on the legality of same-sex marriage, but lower courts as well as the Appeals Court found a city-wide vote would violate the city’s Human Rights Act.

City Council Bill Introduced to Allow Undocumented Immigrants to Obtain Driver’s License

In other controversial national issues with a local angle covered by the Post, D.C. City Council Members Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) introduced a bill today that would allow licenses to be given to those who do not have a Social Security card.

Tea-Party Freshman to Oversee D.C. Subcommittee

Either issue mentioned above could prompt attention from the newest Chairman of a D.C. subcommittee, DCist reports. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) will chair the newly formed Subcommittee on Health Care, District of Columbia, Census and the National Archives. How much attention he will pay to D.C., and what the outcome of that focus is likely to be is anyone’s guess at this point.
