You didn’t have to don a wig for Wig Night Out on Saturday night at Dito’s Bar, but several dozen people turned out to do just that to help raise funds for the Point Foundation. A national organization, the mission of the the Point Foundation is to provide “financial support, mentoring, leadership training and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.”

Point Foundation seeks the partnership of philanthropic individuals, corporations and foundations to supply financial support, professional guidance and a network of contacts for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students who are underprivileged and/or have been socially marginalized — principally by reason of sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity.

If you’re not familiar with 17th Street, you may not know about Dito’s Bar. It’s a small intimate place beneath Floriana’s Restaurant, just north of Q Street. The entrance is below the main steps to the restaurant; you’ll find owner Dito Sevilla behind the bar.

Wig Night Out was organized by a group of four friends in the neighborhood who call themselves the Supreme Wig Council. They meet occasionally to don wigs, drink wine, discuss current events and talk about boys. Why wigs? “Because drag is too much,” according to members of the Council.
