The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Smith Farm on U Street NW has been under construction since last fall. Despite being in transition, the gallery has continued to present art through its “IN-FLUX window peek-show.”

Local artist John M. Adams’ “Efflux” drawing installation and accompanying video documenting the process has been on display at the storefront as part of this series since January 14. Last night, he concluded the exhibition with an interactive street art performance in which he placed the work on the sidewalk for pedestrians to walk on. In addition, Adams stood behind the storefront window drawing on the glass with a black dry erase marker.
Several people walking along U Street stopped in their tracks at the sight of the work laying on the sidewalk. When told by Director Brooke Seidelmann that they were allowed to walk on the piece, many still chose to avoid the work and walk around. Others were oblivious to the drawing and continued on their way.
After the performance, Seidelmann and the gallery welcomed spectators to meet Adams at a closing reception. For more information about The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Smith Farm, visit their website.
