Since March 6, 2009, there have been 3 commercial robberies in the 1700 block of Columbia Road, NW, during the daytime hours. (There were initial reports of a 4th robbery at the Crumbs and Coffee shop , however that was determined not to have been a robbery.) Two of the cases involved a lone suspect and one involved 3 gunmen. I have deployed footbeat and bicycle officers to Columbia Road. In addition, I have reached out to our Special Operations Division to increase traffic enforcement in the area. This will add visibility and deter the criminal element from coming to the area.
The patrol officers on the beat have been directed to reach out to the business owners. I ask that all be vigilant and report any suspicious actvity to us. Anyone who has information about the robberies is asked to call the department on (202) 727-9099. Below is the information about each case:
- March 6, 2009, at 3:15 PM: 1737 Columbia Road, Bank: The suspect handed a note to the teller and demanded money. Suspect is described as a Black male 24-25 years old, 5’4″ – 5’6″, Black baseball cap, black coat, dark sunglasses.
- March 11, 2009, at 10:20 AM: 1726 Columbia Road, Liquor Store: 3 Suspects entered the store armed with hand guns. The suspects are describesd as Black Males. S-1 was wearing a blue jacket with black sleeves and had the Brand emblem (possibly “Northface”) on the right rear shoulder. He appeared to be about 35-40. The other two suspects had black jackets. One of them appeared to be in his 20′s and had dreadlocks. He also has the brand emblem on the right rear shoulder of his jacket.. - March 24, 2009, at 12;50 PM: 1733 Columbia Road, Grocery Store: One suspect entered the store with a handgun and took property. Suspect is described as a black male 25-29 years old, with a black hat, black jacket, blue jeans, and a white t-shirt. He was described as dirty looking.
