There were two gun robberies last night in the Borderstan area. The most disturbing is the first one, which happened early in the evening at 8:40 p.m.; updated details below. on a very busy stretch of U Street—14th and U, to be exact. One has to assume the area was filled with a fairly large number of people on a Friday evening in the spring.
Details on both crimes below; information is from Police Alerts.
- Friday, March 26, 8:40 p.m., Robbery with Gun, 1400 U Street NW. According to DC police, “Male suspect entered a restaurant in the block and demanded money… apparently pointed a silver handgun, obtained money and fled. Suspect was a black male wearing dark jeans, black jacket with gray sleeves and black tennis shoes.”
- Saturday, March 27, 1:30 a.m., Robbery with Gun, R and 16th Streets NW: “On Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 1:45 a.m., a Robbery/While Armed (Gun) offense occurred in the 1500 block of R St., N.W. (PSA 208) and was subsequently reported to the MPD. The victim reported that while walking in the alley he was approached from the rear by a subject who struck him on the back of the head. The victim fell to the ground after which time the suspect pointed a gun at him and demanded his wallet and jewelry. The victim complied and the suspect fled the area eastbound in the alley.”

we were attacked in Mt. Pleasant in February by two gunmen. We lived on 15th and R, used the back alleys regularly. We have since moved out. I thought Mt. Pleasant was safer than the 15th street neighborhood, what with all the low income housing a block up. Having car windows smashed is no fun, but being attacked in your backyard when it’s finally nice to walk outside sucks. I think it’s safe to say it can happen anytime anywhere by anyone any age, but anytime you see a group of kids get the hell away from them and/or turn around.
The key probelm is that the police do very little follow up if there’s no murder, and they didn’t even bother to have us look at potential suspects in a line up or anything, they just “hit a dead end” in our case two days later. They guys who attacked us were from PG county, go figure. DC and MD cops don’t talk. and won’t be solving any cross-state crimes. Sad to say, but there are too many guns on the street. They are hitting the more popular areas now even when it’s crowded. That is very very concerning. What I can say is I have kept my wallet and keys and phone on my body, and have a fake out basically empty purse when I’m in DC now. If I were a guy I’d keep all my wallet relatively empty. keep your cards on you and most of the cash in your pockets. At least for now, they don’t seem to be shooting victims.
A further incident that happened to me on Thursday evening (March 25th) at the intersection of 11th and R around 8:00 PM. I and a friend were walking westward on R (going to dinner) and saw a group of teenagers (8 to 10, African american, male and female)approaching from the East down R. At the corner by Lincoln Temple, we crossed to the opposite side of R. As we we proceeded to cross 11th, I heard something drop and then a large rock hit me in the back of the head. The group continued down R, laughing, towards the Shaw metro. I didn’t realize that a scalp could produce that much blood! We called the police (they came quickly), and emergency services checked the wound. Luckily, it was small, and because it had stopped bleeding, I decided not to go to the emergency room.
Are there any further details on where exactly at 14th & U the robbery occurred? Those postings by MPD are not always accurate and could have occurred in an alley or off the main streets. Details would be appreciated, as a robbery on the sidewalk at that time would represent a major concern.

Was stopped by neighbors this afternoon who was one of the victims in our alley between Corcoran and R street. they felt compelled to tell be when they saw my twins coming out of our garage that abutts the alley. Sad. We didn’t hear anything last night. Hopefully they will catch this guy!
I hope the police put up a picture of the guy from 14&U. There are a lot of cameras in the area.

Thanks for keeping all of us aware of these disturbing robberies in our community. We all need to be extra vigilant. Clearly these purpetrators are fealess if they are attcking at busy areas. Please keep up the good work.
