Armed Robbery: 16th & K NW, 1:43 PM

I think this DC Police Alert from this afternoon almost leaves me speechless. An armed gunman committed a robbery this afternoon at 1:43 p.m. at 16th & K NW, which is exactly 0.4 miles north of The White House.

Questions for the DC City Council: My family visits next month from Illinois. If they ask me, “Is downtown DC safe?” what would you like me to tell them? Should I say, “Don’t go near The White House in broad daylight, you might get robbed by an armed gunman”?

Just asking.

    Jeezus… That’s pretty ******* bold.

Get police out of their cars, and on the street walking the beat or on bikes.

If there aren’t enough police to do that and cover the city, then hire more police so that there’s a mix of cars, bikers, and walkers.

There should never be a cop out of yelling distance.

Works for NYC. It’s safe to walk around Manhattan anytime of the day. Cops are always around.

One month since my assault and robbery on Corcoran St, lots of police visits to my house to reassure me that they were patrolling, trying to keep the neighborhood safe, etc.

In that month, the number of times I have seen a police on foot or even a cruiser come down my block – ZERO.

    Where are they?

  3. Eric says:

Even though DC has one of the 10 largest police forces in the nation, it’s clearly not enough.

There need to be officers on bikes or walking around, making their presence felt.

If there aren’t enough police around to do that, then hire more.

It’s that simple. The police need to have a permanent presence on the street, whatever that takes… not just patrol in cars.
