New Openings: Blackbyrd Warehouse & Boqueria
Urban Daddy brings word of another oyster option in Borderstan, called Blackbyrd Warehouse at the intersection of 14th Street and U Street. It will boast six kind of oysters, crab legs and more when it opens (planned opening is Friday, July 15).Washington City Paper had the story on Boqueria, a Barcelona inspired tapas bar by way of New York. Boqueria Washington, D.C. will be located on the corner of M Street and 19th Street and has an opening date of “Fall 2011″.
Parking Lots Transform Into Condos
Yes, more condos are coming to the neighborhood. No, it’s not a Michael Bay production. The former Dunbar Apartments parking lot is being developed into 96 units, which I’m not so sure is welcome. DC Metrocentric has details (and Tom Hay reported on it last week as well). Do you agree with the blog that incorporating the nearby church design would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood, or do you like the design as is? Do you just hate more condos?
DC City Council Committee Shake Up
Despite public opposition, DC Council Chairman Kwame “Fully Loaded” Brown went ahead with the committee reassignments on Tuesday. Councilmember Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) was moved to the chairman position for the Libraries, Parks and Recreation Committee from his position on the Committee of Public Works and Transportation. Brown explained his reasoning, saying the change was due to the election of Vincent Orange in the April special election. Some think the moves are payback from Brown to Wells for his report on “The Navigator” — you know, the Fully Loaded One. DCist has the full story and new listings.
Not Too Late: DC Hip-Hop Theater Festival
So, by the time you read this, you may already have missed one of the awesome events of the Festival. The 6th Annual DC <3 Dilla Tribute and Fundraiser was last night, honoring the late J. Dilla. You still have time to check out the Thursday, Friday and Saturday events, however, which will also be fantastic. Check out what’s happening at Arena Stage, theater at the Dance Place, a B Boy battle at St. Stephens Church or the closing jam at Tap and Parlour.
ABRA Cancels Wine-in-Alley Fire Sale
You’ve probably heard by now that U Wine and Beer caught fire on Friday, July 8. They will be closed for a few weeks. In order to recoup some money during the down time and recovery, they were planning on selling wine in the alley behind their store (I know, fire sale is a sort of crass headline, but that’s what they were calling it). That is, until the city’s Alcoholic Beverage Regulatory Agency (ABRA) caught wind of their plans and denied their permit. Thanks to U Street Girl for the updated story. ABRA, have a heart! BTW, ABRA is located across the street from the store.
FLOTUS Visits Shake Shack…
And everyone freaked out. I know that First Lady Michelle Obama is promoting healthy eating and running an anti-obesity campaign. But, even with the calorie counts at the Shack, one splurge meal does not a media circus make. NBC 4 indulges in the story, but credits the Washington Post‘s breathless account of FLOTUS’ “whopping” 1,700 calorie meal.
