This Wednesday, July 25, catch Batalá Washington at the Howard Theatre, 6th and T Streets NW. Batalá Washington is an all-women percussion band that empowers women through drumming and promotes Brazil’s dynamic music and culture. It is currently comprised of 80 members from all over the greater DC area, playing Afro-Brazilian/Samba-Reggae rhythms as part of the international collective of Batala bands.
Batalá’s music, colorful costumes & energetic dancing, create a visual & auditory experience few forget! They have been voted by the Washington City Paper as DC’s 2012 Best Local Band, and if you have seen them perform, this will not be a surprise.
On Wednesday they will be joined by Maracuyeah, a DC-based DJ collective comprised of DJ Rat and DJ Mafe, spinning Latin Alternative beats. Together, they are opening for Bomba Estereo, a band out of Bogota, Colombia, that was named by MTV Iggy one of the 25 “Best New Bands in the World.”
Bomba Estereo plays a mixture of hip hop, electronic, cumbia, and champeta rhythms, which combine for what they call “Electro Vacilón” or “Electro tropical.” With these three bands joining forces it promises to be a hot show at The Howard Theatre.
