The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is asking for assistance in locating a second suspect in the shooting of an adult male in the 1600 block of 17th Street NW Saturday afternoon, July 14. (See Man Shot in Vicinity 17th and Corcoran NW Saturday Afternoon).

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call MPD at 202-727-9099. You can also text tips to MPD anonymously by sending information to 50411. According to DC Police, the second suspect is described as a 16-to-17 year old black male about 5’9” tall. During the robbery, he was wearing blue jeans, green underwear, a white t-shirt, and a black kufi cap. The InTowner reported that the arrested suspect was also a male juvenile.

According to a release from MPD, two suspects armed with handguns attempted to rob a man at about 3:15 pm. During an altercation between the victim, the suspects, and other citizens present, one person was shot in the leg. That person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspects both fled the scene, but MPD officers found and arrested one suspect nearby for the shooting, and located both handguns. According to the InTowner, the shooting victim was a painter who had been working on an apartment above Cairo Wine and Liquor at 1618 17th Street NW.

Gun Crimes Rare on 17th Street

Gun crimes are not common on the 17th street corridor. Prior to Saturday, in all of Police Service Area 301, which covers 14th Street NW to 18th Street NW between Q Street NW and Florida Ave NW, there have been six gun robberies and two gun assaults in 2012. None of these incidents took place on 17th Street NW.

In PSA 208, which covers 17th Street NW south of Q Street, there have been five gun robberies (none of them near the 17th Street corridor) and zero assaults with a gun in 2012.
