The building at 1901 14th Street NW has been home to many iconic DC establishments, including a bowling alley in 1907, an automobile showroom in 1920 and a famous jazz club (Club Bali) in the 1940s… And this fall, it will be home to one of the District’s most popular restaurants, matchbox.

Drew Kim, one of three owners of matchboxfoodgroup, recently gave us a tour of the restaurant’s new location at 14th and T Streets NW, which comes equipped with patio seating, an outdoor fire pit, two brick ovens and three floors of dine-in seating.

Kim, who hopes to open the fifth matchbox location my the end of the month, is paying homage to the building’s history by keeping the original beams and ceiling, while incorporating little nods to its previous tenants. Kim also has big plans for some special seating areas, including a large-party table on the first floor that is “like nothing you’ve experienced before,” floating “box seats” and a potential private dining room area (it’s still in the works).

As for the menu, it will stay pretty true to most of the other restaurants, but will allow for some local and seasonal flare.

“We want to allow the chefs to cook for the neighborhood,” said Kim.

Once the opening date is set, matchbox will serve dinner Monday through Friday, and brunch, lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

The Matchbox location at 14th & T will be the fifth, not the fourth location of the restaurant. The other Matchboxes now operating are in Penn Quarter, Barracks Row, Rockville, and Palm Springs, CA.
