A man robbed the TD Bank branch at 1753 Connecticut Avenue NW just before noon Friday, October 4. According to a tweet from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), he was wearing a blue suit and a blue cap. He did not show a gun in the bank robbery, but did hand the teller a note demanding money.
According to the The Washington Post, the man dropped a package as he exited the bank, and so police closed down a number of streets to investigate the suspicious package. Connecticut Avenue NW between R Street and Florida Avenue NW was closed in both directions for about two hours as explosives units from the MPD investigated. S Street NW between Connecticut Avenue and 20th Street NW was also shut down.
The shutdown of Connecticut Avenue led to major traffic back-ups on surrounding side streets. The FBI was also on the scene collecting evidence in the bank robbery. The package was determined to not be a threat, and all streets reopened around 2:30 pm.
Police have made no arrests in the case. TD Bank will remain closed the rest of the day.
