One of the city’s most respected interior designers, Darryl Carter, is building a design studio among the construction and development on 9th Street NW in Shaw. Carter, who has authored two design books and has worked as a designer since 1998, is renovating the 19th-century commercial property into a design store and studio.
According to an article in The Washington Post, the property includes “a two-story building at 1320 9th Street NW, parts of which are pre-Civil War, and a carriage house in back facing cobblestone Naylor Court.”
Carter plans to sell furniture (some antique and some he designed) and accessories in the store, and staff the carriage house with designers for consultations on room design, color selections and other services his business offers. According to The Post article, Carter also plans to host art shows in the new space. “I want it to be a neighborhood gathering place,” he said in the article.

Carter bought the property in 2008 and has since worked on renovating and collecting different materials for the space, including salvaged and reclaimed materials.

According to Carter’s staff, the new store is expected to open November 24th. The details on hours of operation are still unclear, but new space will be open on weekends.
