Today is Dedicated to the Worker Bees Stuck in Offices

I know. Either you’re still off work and enjoying all that DC or the JFK terminal in New York has to offer, or you have just attempted to find the end of the Internet at work during the slowest week of the year. So if you notice that today’s issue is link-heavy, consider it our little present to our worker bees out there who are stuck in the office on the next to the last day of 2010.

BTW, we hope you enjoy the special Borderstan New Year banner at the top of the page, another creation of Neil MacLean. He was a U Street resident until he recently moved to Brooklyn (but still works with DC clients).

Renaming Soviet Safeway?

Washington City Paper decided that ‘Soviet Safeway’ needs a new name since it is stocked more efficiently these days. Stupid Safeway was their choice. Thoughts? I know you can do better than that, so here’s some help for ‘s’ words. If you stick with ‘Soviet’, spend some time revisiting the classic “Red Dawn”, where America feared Latin American invasion, Jennifer Grey had her nose and Patrick Swayze wasn’t dead. Click here and find the 2011 remake here.

Twitter Feuds on Center Stage

Check out TBD’s article on memorable Twitter battles this year, as they fire a full salvo at Fishbowl DC. And if you are inspired to start your own feuds, there is one brewing over #DCTweeps. Check out the twitter stream and you’ll be occupied until lunch.

City Summits: Bedbugs and Bikes

DC is planning a bike safety summit in February, WABA reports. As the bike lanes on 15th Street NW near completion, it’s a great time for area bikers to make themselves heard. The other summit will be a bit more unified, as the city mobilizes against bedbugs. The Federal Bedbug Work Group (seriously, that’s the name, you can’t make that up!) will convene February 1-2 to discuss solutions to the epidemic, the Post reports.

Brickskeller is Now Bier Baron, Open For Business

Washington City Paper has the scoop on Bier Baron, which opened last night. Anyone have a field report on service, smell and selection – they had about 350 beers bequeathed by the vacating owners. Take a long lunch and tell us about it!

Scary Report Shows Serious Sexual Assaults Up from 2009

Yikes! I hope DC’s New Year’s resolution is to get this terrifying statistic corrected – sexual assaults were up 50% this year from a year ago, the Washington Examiner reports. The rate tripled in the 2nd District and doubled in the 3rd District. There is a question, though, about the data; read the article for details.
