Tuesday AM: Water Main Break on 1300 Block U Street NW

From DC Water around 2 am on Tuesday, January 17: "DC Water crews/contractors are currently repairing a broken 12 inch water main located on U St between 13th and 14th St NW. Some customers in the area may experience a disruption in water service until repairs are complete. Traffic is not impacted by the repair work." And this update around 5 am via DC Alert: "Update: DC Water reports that the water main break on U St. between 13th and 14th streets NW, is affecting 14 commercial buildings, not 31. Jan. 18: Used Book Sale at Jewish Community Center

The DC Jewish Community Center is hosting its semi-annual used book sale on Wednesday, January 18, from 4 to 8 pm. The JCC is at the corner of 16th and Q Streets NW. Used CDs and DVDs will also be on sale. The JCC is accepting donations of books, CDs and DVDs in good condition from Sunday, January 15, through Tuesday, January 17. Donations can be dropped off in bags or boxes with the front desk or put in the library; please mark them as donations.

Jan. 16: No Trash Pickup, No Parking Enforcement

The DC Department of Public Works is observing the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday on Monday, January 16. As a result, there will be no trash and recycling collections. Parking regulations will not be enforced either. In once-a-week collection neighborhoods, collections will “slide” to the next day. In twice-a-week collection neighborhoods, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday. Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the collection day. As for parking enforcement, there is no enforcement of parking meters, residential parking, and rush hour lane violations. DPW also will not tow abandoned vehicles. Parking enforcement will resume Tuesday, January 17.

The January meeting of the U Street Neighborhood Association is Thursday, January 12, at 7 pm. Location is the Source Theater, 1835 14th Street NW. On the agenda: presentations by the owners of Matchbox and Black & Orange, two new eateries coming to 14th Street NW. Matchbox will open another location at the northeast corner of 14th and T Streets NW. Black & Orange will open at 1931 14th Street NW.

Service for Peter Fox Friday at Foundry United Methodist

Peter Fox, well known by many in the gay community for his vocal talents in the Gay Men's Chorus of DC, passed away after an abbreviated battle with lymphoma. In recent years, his singing career blossomed through performances at the Kennedy Center, Signature Theater and the release of an album. Washington Blade has a lovely article on Fox, featuring recollections from friends and family. The funeral services are Friday at 10 am at Foundry United Methodist Church. The article also includes info on how and where to make donations in his name. From the Blade article: "Many in Washington’s gay community are reeling from the death of Peter Fox, a well-liked local singer who died Monday after a short battle with central nervous system lymphoma. A funeral is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at Foundry United Methodist Church for the 45-year-old musician."

Jan. 3: DC Begins Collecting Holiday Trees Curbside

The DC Department of Public Works begins picking up holiday trees and wreaths curbside on Tuesday, January 3. DPW will pick up holiday greenery through Saturday, January 14. DPW says, "Remove all decorations and place the greenery in the treebox space in front of your home between Monday, January 2, and Monday, January 9. Please do not put the trees in plastic or cloth bags. "Trees collected between January 3 and 14 will be recycled. Any trees not collected by January 14 should be set out with your trash to be picked up as space in the trash trucks allows over the following weeks."

Borderstan’s Holiday Logos

Starting today and running through January 2, Borderstan is getting some holiday decoration. Thanks go to Neil MacLean, a former Borderstani, who designed the green Borderstan logo you normally see every day on the site (as well as the smaller B logo). Hanukkah's eight days begin December 20 this year, so from today through Thursday the Borderstan logo is blue with a nine-branched Hanukkah Menorah. Starting Friday we will have one of Neil's special Christmas holidays logos... and then on December 27 we will have a special New Year 2012 logo.
