June 1-12: Capital Pride Events in Borderstan Area

Capital Pride 2011, Borderstan.com

Find our ad in this year’s Capital Pride Guide. (Ad by Six-Five Design Group)

The theme of the 2011 Capital Pride celebration is “Celebration and Opportunity: Paving the Way,” created in recognition of the many pioneers who fought for LGBT rights over the previous decades. Borderstan.com is proud to be among this year’s sponsors.

You can find the entire list of Pride events on the Capital Pride website calendar. What follows are some highlights, with a special emphasis on events in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area. Dupont, and increasingly Logan, is the heart of the D.C. LGBT community, so many of the events are close to home.

Remember to check event details for cover charges, ticket prices and ticket availability.

Two big events: The parade is Saturday, June 11 at 5:30 pm, starting at Dupont Circle and winding its way to Thomas Circle NW (check out Luis’ photos from the 2010 parade). The festival on Pennsylvania Avenue is Sunday, June 12 at 11 am. DJ Tony Moran will DJing on stage at Capital Pride Sunday June 12 to premiere the title track of his new album “Magic” with legendary singer Jennifer Holliday.

Taste of Pride runs June 6 through 12. There are seven establishments here in the neighborhood — Cafe Saint-Ex, Floriana, Hank’s Oyster Bar, Level One, Local 16, Policy and Tabaq. Check the Taste site for details — when you eat at one of the participating restaurants a donation will be made to Captial Pride.

Also, keep an eye out for our Breaking News section on the landing page — we will be highlighting Pride events of the day.

Below the fold: Events listed by day.

Welcome to the New Borderstan Site

Welcome  to the new Borderstan.com. The design should make it easier for you to find out what’s happening in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area. Posts are now organized in six categories: News, Arts & Entertainment, Food & Drink, Crime, Business, and Politics & Government. (At the top of each section page, you can get an RSS feed for that particular content section.)

At the top you will find tabs to some information pages. Under the Borderstan tab you can find a map of the area we cover along with our blogroll of DC-area blogs. The Resources Pages will be updated this week to provide you with more information and links to resources in the neighborhood.

We will be making some minor changes and improvements in the coming weeks to the new site. So, please send us an email (borderstan@gmail.com) or leave a comment about suggested improvements to the site.

One thing that has not changed: Our focus is still the area of DC where the Dupont-Logan-U Street neighborhoods meet and fuse—or as we call it, Borderstan.

Some thank yous are in order. Luis worked with web designer Raymond Goode to create the Borderstan site; please check out his website, rgg studio. Finally, we send a very big thank you to our readers.

Is anyone else besides you reading this stuff at Borderstan.com? In other words, “Are you a loser for visiting this blog?” Of course not! Borderstan.com is a tiny little blog in the land of the blogosphere, just as Borderstan is a tiny little autonomous region of Dupont-Logan.

But, you are not alone in your visits to Borderstan.com. In March, we had 13,466 visitors, an average of 434 per day during the month.

We thank you!

"Am I the Only One Who Reads this Stuff?"

"Nightfall on Corcoran Street" by Luis Gomez, One Photograph A Day.

“Nightfall.” Looking west on 1500-block of Corcoran Street NW (photo by Luis Gomez, One Photograph A Day).

In case you have ever asked yourself, “Am I the only one who reads this stuff on Borderstan.com?” the answer is, “No.” The average number of views or hits per day is around 100. For a small, new blog that focuses on a limited geographic area with a very specific focus, I would say this is “not bad.”

Remember that the primary purpose of Borderstan.com is disseminate public safety information to Borderstanians. Our secondary purpose is to provide neighbors with information about their community. Finally, we also aim to amuse and entertain from time to time (it’s also a good way to get you to read the public safety info).
