Go mama go! marked a new beginning for the late Noi Chudnoff and business partner, Jocelyn Lindsay, when the store opened in 2000. Starting as a vendor in Eastern Market and later expanding to a retail space on 14th Street NW, go mama go! quickly became a destination for residents taking a Saturday afternoon stroll in the neighborhood.

After Chudnoff passed away suddenly in 2007, husband Jonathan and store manager Jeffrey Johnson continued the legacy she built with the retail store.

Not only was Noi Chudnoff a purveyor of eclectic taste, but she was also an arts advocate dedicated to supporting local organizations including ganymede arts (formerly Actors’ Theatre of Washington), Washington’s premier GLBT arts company.

In 2008 Chudnoff was posthumously named a Capital Pride Hero during Gay Pride week in June. She also donated $100,000 in 2005 to the National Lesbian and Gay Task Force.

According to Jonathan Chudnoff, “The social component of the store was just as important to her as selling.”

“Falsettos is a universal story of the modern day family. It focuses on a man named Marvin who leaves his wife and young son to live with another man yet ends up alone. Two years later, Marvin is reunited with his lover on the eve of his son’s Bar Mitzvah, just as AIDS is beginning its insidious spread.”

You have four choices this weekend at theaters in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area:

  • Entering its second weekend at the Source Theater on 14th Street is a production by The In Series. The theater group is billing the show as “a double bill of American ‘pocket’ opera: Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble In Tahiti and William Bolcom and Arnold Weinstein’s Casino Paradise.” The double production begins at 8 pm and runs through October 2.
  • Something You Did at Theater J offers one performance this weekend: Sunday at 8 pm. Of the show, Theater J says, “A stellar student from a good family, Alison Moulton is serving her 30th year behind bars for an anti-war bombing that resulted in the death of a police officer. Now petitioning for parole…” Theater J is at 16th and Q NW in the DC Jewish Community Center.
  • Circle Mirror Transformation is at the Studio Theatre, 14th and P NW: “This charming new play invites the audience into an amateur theatre class in rural Vermont. Theatre games and acting exercises mirror the real drama taking place between the students.”
  • You can catch Falsettos on Friday, Saturday or Sunday night at Noi’s Nook at go mama go! on 14th Street NW. It is a production of Ganymede Arts, DC’s LGCT theater company: “Falsettos is a universal story of the modern day family. It focuses on a man named Marvin who leaves his wife and young son to live with another man yet ends up alone. Two years later, Marvin is reunited with his lover on the eve of his son’s Bar Mitzvah, just as AIDS is beginning its insidious spread.”
