Glen’s Garden Market is opening this weekend, Sunday, April 21 at 20th and S Streets NW. Check out the photos of the interior of the new store.

Sunday may seem odd for an opening day, but owner Danielle Vogel planned to open the hyper-local focused specialty food store in conjunction with Earth Day.

Vogel, a self-described fourth generation grocer, decided to open her own store after several years of working on environmental policy on the Hill.  After experiencing frustration with the job — and more specifically frustration with the climate bill — Vogel decided to take the climate’s destiny in her own hands, with a store that minimizes environmentally harmful practices.

What to Expect at Glen’s

Here’s what you can expect to see/taste at Glen’s:

• A bar/beverage area with local draft beers, bottled draft beers, a wide selection of local wines (lots of Virginia wines) and a wine dispensing machine.
• A fully-stocked specialty meat and cheese counter. Think: spicy bison pastrami, beef pastrami and other hand-sliced local meats.
• Locally-sourced chocolates. No need to say more.
• Recycled interiors, such as wood that was used at a cattle fence at one of the locally-sourced farms.

The 5,000-square-foot space focuses on food and drink from the states of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which includes DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New York.

Vogel, who has been working to open the space for two years says she chose the location because she feels the neighborhood will “welcome a concept like ours.”

Glen’s is opening in the former site of a Townhouse Safeway grocery store, which closed in 2010.

On Earth Day weekend (April 21), Dupont Circle will be home to an independent specialty market dedicated to sourcing wholesome, locally grown foods. Glen’s Garden Market will open at 20th and S Streets NW — the former home of the Safeway Townhouse store.

“We could not be more excited about welcoming our neighbors into the store on Earth Day weekend,” said Danielle Vogel, proprietor of Glen’s Garden Market. “We have spent years finding the most delicious foods, wines and beers our region has to offer, and we can’t wait to share them.”

The 5,000-square-foot space will feature foods from the states of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which includes DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New York.

“You will be amazed by all of the wonderful products we’ve been able to find close by,” said Vogel.

A former Dupont resident, herself, Vogel chose the location because she feels the neighborhood will “welcome a concept like ours.”

“It seemed like the perfect place to nestle our neighborhood market,” she said. Glen’s Garden Market has been under construction since December 2012.

New farm fresh market to open spring 2013.

It has been a long two years for residents on the north and west sides of Borderstan looking for last minute fixings for dinner. Since the Townhouse (“Secret”) Safeway at Florida and 20h Street closed, Dupont residents have been out of luck.

There has been Safeway on 17th Street in a pinch – but when what you really need is that organic ingredient, super-fresh produce or a particular specialty item, Whole Foods was a time consuming trek in a time crunch.

Next spring our long yuppie nightmare will end with the opening of Glen’s Garden Market in the former Secret Safeway space in Dupont Circle (2001 S Street NW). Proprietor Danielle Vogel will bring seasonal and sustainable produce, meats, dairy, beers and wine and specialty foods straight from the Chesapeake Bay watershed to our dinner tables. Her goal is to source products only from farms and chefs in the immediate DMV area as well as West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York – tasting every product as she goes.

Danielle has spent several years developing relationships with local farmers who produce the types of small batch products, most often without huge production facilities, that she hopes to feature at Glen’s and has tasted her fair share of jellies, jams and mustards. All this research will pay off for customers in the form of a “full time farmer’s market in a grocery store.”

The market will also feature a beer and wine bar, showcasing the regional breweries and wineries that consistently bring home the gold in competition, and a communal space for enjoying our region’s best products in the store with friends.

A former Borderstan resident who has lived in the DC area for a decade, Danielle knows the neighborhood and clientele well, and even has done her own stint in the government like many of us. Though she is a first-time business owner, she is excited to join the generations of entrepreneurs in her family, and feels like this is something she has been waiting to do her whole life. That passion for food and family shows: Glen’s Garden Market is named after her father, Glen, who passed away in 2002.

The vacant space on 20th and S Streets NW, once occupied by a neighborhood Safeway store, has a new tenant: Glen’s Garden Market. According to a message posted on DupontForum on Tuesday, June 19, CityBiz Real Estate reported that the Chesapeake Bay-area store, specializing in local produce, meats, poultry and dairy products, will take over the lease. There is no word yet on when the store will open.

It’s been almost two years since the locally dubbed “Secret Safeway” closed its doors, making the Safeway store at 17th and Corcoran to closest grocery store for many area residents.
