4th-Quarter PSA 307 Crime Stats

For Police Service Area (PSA) 307, fourth-quarter violent crime is down 13% in 2008 while property crimes increased 7% for 2008 over 2007. The big increase is in thefts from autos. Overall, the fourth-quarter crime rate for PSA 307 rose 3% in 2008 from the fourth quarter of 2007.

The table, below, has crime stats for PSA 307 for the the fourth quarter (October through December) for 2006, 2007 and 2008. Generally, PSA 307 encompasses the Logan Circle neighborhood and parts of Shaw. East Borderstan is part of PSA 307 (from 14th to 15th and P to S Streets NW). West Borderstan (15th to 16th Streets) is part of PSA 208.

PSA 307 Highlights

Remember that all figures are for the fourth-quarter period only.

  • Violent crime during the fourth-quarter in PSA 307 has declined each of the past two years. It was down 13% in 2008 and is down 25% since 2006.
  • The number of robberies in PSA 307 has remained stable the past three years during the fourth quarter: 29 in 2006, 32 in 2007 and 31 in 2008.
  • The number of gun crimes was the same in 2007 and 2008: 12. There were 14 gun crimes in 2006.
  • The increase in fourth-quarter crime in PSA 307 was in the overall property crime category, following a substanital drop in 2007. Property crimes rose 7% in 2008 after dropping a whopping 25% in 2007.
  • The number of fourth-quarter burglaries dropped again in 2008 to 21 from 24 in 2007. This is a substantial decrease since the 53 fourth-quarter burglaries in 2006. This is a 60% drop in two years.
  • Fourth-quarter thefts in PSA 307 have remained steady in the past three calendar years: 67 in 2006, 65 in 2007 and 68 in 2008.
  • After decreasing 40% in 2007, thefts from autos increased 35%  in 2008 (from 62 to 84). However, this is still below the 2006 rate when there were 103 thefts from autos during the fourth quarter.
  • The number of stolen autos in the fourth-quarter 2008 in PSA 307 decreased 31% from 32 stolen autos in 2007  to 22 in 2008.
  • For the fourth quarter, total crime in PSA 307 is up about 3% in 2008–but still 21% below 2006.
