Borderstan Violent Crime Rate Unchanged in 2008

For the Borderstan area of Dupont-Logan, the number of violent crimes over the past three years has been almost exactly the same: 38 in 2006, 39 in 2007 and 39 in 2008. However, the number of property crimes was up slightly in 2008 by 6% after dropping substantially by 26% in 2007. Total crime in Borderstan rose 5% in 2008 (due the increase in property crimes) after falling 23% in 2007.

What are Borderstan crimes? They are crimes that occur within 1,000 feet (circular pattern) of 15th and Corcoran Streets NW (center of Borderstan)West Borderstan (west of 15th NW) is part of PSA 208 while East Borderstan (east of 15th NW) is part of PSA 307. Borderstan borders are P to S Streets and 14th to 16th Streets NW.

Borderstan Crime Highlights

  • Violent crime was almost exactly at the same rate for the third year in a row in Borderstan: 38 crimes in 2006, 39 in 2007 and 39 in 2008.
    • The number of robberies rose 18% in 2008 after declining slightly in 2007. Total number of robberies in Borderstan by year: 31 in 2006, 27 in 2007 and 32 in 2008.
    • The number of assaults with a dangersous weapon (with and without a gun) were almost exactly the same in 2008 after falling noticeably in 2007. Number of assaults with a dangerous weapon by year in Borderstan: 16 in 2006, 6 in 2007 and 7 in 2008.
    • The number of gun crimes increased sightly Borderstan in 2008, from seven to 10; there were seven gun crimes in 2006.
  • Total property crime increased 6% in 2008 after dropping 26% in 2007. This increase was driven by more thefts from autos and stolen autos. Still, over the past two years, Borderstan property crimeis down 22%.
    • The number of burglaries in Borderstan dropped a substantial 33% in 2008 from to 26 from 39 in 2007; there were 41 burglaries in 2006. Over the past two years, the burglary rate has dropped 37%.
    • Thefts in Borderstan increased slightly to 72 in 2008 from 68 in 2007. However, there were 90 thefts in 2006, meaning the theft rate is still 20% below two years ago.
    • Thefts from autos were up 10% in Borderstan in 2008 after dropping substantially by 25% in 2007. Number of thefts from autos by year: 136 in 2006, 102 in 2007 and 112 in 2008.
    • The number of stolen autos in 2008 in Borderstan jumped to 32 from 20 in 2007, a 60% increase. This number is still below the 42 stolen autos in 2006.
  • For 2008, total crime in Borderstan was up 5% from 2007 after dropping 23% in 2007. For the past two years (2006-2008), total crime is still down 19% thanks to the noticeable drop in 2007.
