Here are the year-to-date (January 1 through February 28) crime stats for Police Service Area (PSA) 307 for 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Even though overall violent crime held steady for the period in PSA 307, there are disturbing statistics in terms of gun crimes. The number of gun crimes jumped from 3 in the first two months of 2008 to 7 this year; there were 5 gun crimes in the January-February period of 2007 in PSA 307.

Moreover, assaults increaed from 8 to 11 in the past year for the January-February period. Robberies dipped from 17 to 15 in the first two months of the year, from 2008 to 2009.

Noticeable Trends in PSA 307

  • A large drop in property crimes dramatically decreased the total crime rate for the first two months of 2009 compared to last year. Total number of crimes in 2007 was 170, rising to 180 in 2008 and dropping to 144 in 2009–a 20%-decline in the past year.
  • Total property crimes in PSA 307 dropped 23% during the past year–from 154 property crimes in the first two months of 2008 to 118 in the same period of 2009.
    • Thefts went up from 31 to 43, but thefts from autos dropped a whopping 45% from 99 incidents in January-February 2008 (a spike from the previous year) to 54 thefts from autos for the first two months of 2009.
    • Burglaries in PSA 307 have decreased from 17 in January-February 2007 to 10 in 2008 and 8 in the same period of this year.
  • Even with the jump in gun crimes, overall violent crime in PSA 307 held steady for the first two months of 2009 compared to 2008–exactly 26 violent crimes in each reporting period (compared to 20 in 2007).
    • Gun crime was up, however, from 3 gun crimes in the first two months of 2008, to 7 gun crimes in the same period this year. (This compares to 5 gun crimes in the January-February 2007 period.)
    • The number of assaults (with a gun or a dangerous weapon) increased from 3 in 2007 to 8 in 2008 and 11 during the first two months of this year.

Generally, PSA 307 encompasses the Logan Circle neighborhood and parts of Shaw. East Borderstan is part of PSA 307 (from 14th to 15th and P to S Streets NW). West Borderstan (15th to 16th Streets) is part of PSA 208.
