Here are the year-to-date (January 1 through March 31) crime stats for Police Service Area (PSA) 307 for 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Violent crime was up for the period in PSA 307 (from 33 in 2008) to 39 in 2009), with the number of gun crimes doubling from 5 in 2008 to 10 this year. For the January-March period of 2007, there were 8 gun crimes.

Year-over-year, the property crime rate in PSA 307 for the January-March period was flat. There were 200 property crimes this year compared to 199 last year and 213 in 2007.

Noticeable Trends in PSA 307, January-March

  • With the jump in gun crimes, overall violent crimein PSA 307 for the first three months was up 18% year over year.
    • The number of assaults (with a gun or a dangerous weapon) has increased in each of the past two years: 8 in 2007, 10 in 2008 and 13 in 2009.
    • The number of robberies (with and without a gun) increased for the first three months of 2009 after holding steady last year. There were 26 robberies in the January-March period this year compared with 22 for each of the previous two years.
  • In terms of property crimesin PSA 307, the rate held steady year-over-year, but there were some noticeable trends.
    • Thefts shot up 61% in 2009 from 2008 for the first three months of the year, from 46 to 74–after dropping from 62 in 2007.
    • However, thefts from autos dropped 26% from 118 incidents in January-March 2008 (a spike from the previous year) to 87 thefts from autos for the first three months of 2009. There were 110 such crimes in the same period of 2007.
    • The number of stolen autos for the period increased from 18 in 2008 to 22 this year. This is a 100% increase in stolen autos in PSA 307 since the January-March 2007 period (11 such crimes).
    • The number of burglaries in PSA 307 remained at 17 for the first three months of the year (same as 2008). This is a large decrease since the 30 burglaries reported in the January-March period of 2007.

Generally, PSA 307 encompasses the Logan Circle neighborhood and parts of Shaw. East Borderstan is part of PSA 307 (from 14th to 15th and P to S Streets NW). West Borderstan (15th to 16th Streets) is part of PSA 208.
