Borderstan: YTD Crime Stats, January-April

Here are the year-to-date (January 1 through April 30) crime stats for the Borderstan area of DupontLogan, for 2007, 2008 and 2009.

What are Borderstan crimes? They are crimes that occur within 1,000 feet (circular pattern) of 15th and Corcoran Streets NW (center of Borderstan). West Borderstan (west of 15th NW) is part of PSA 208 while East Borderstan (east of 15th NW) is part of PSA 307. Borderstan borders are P to S Streets and 14th to 16th Streets NW.

Noticeable Crime Trends in Borderstan, January-April

  • Total Crime in Borderstan for the first four months of the year is almost back at the 2007 level after dropping in 2008: 93 crimes in 2007, 71 in 2008 and 88 in 2009. This is a 24% increase over last year–due to a sharp 33% increase in property crimes. In fact, there is a slight drop in violent crimes from last year.

 

  • The number of violent crimes has decreased each of the past two years for the January-April period–from 17 in 2007 to 12 in 2008 and 10 in 2009.
  • However, the number of gun crimesactually increased from 2 to 4, from 2008 to 2009.
    • The number of robberies in Borderstan has been fairly consistent: 9 in 2007, 8 in 2008 and 10 in 2009.
    • However, there were no assaults for the January to April 2009 period in Borderstan, after 4 each of the previous years.
  • The total increase in the crime rate for the January-April period was in property crimes, which rose 33% over last year and are even higher than for the same four-month period in 2007. There were 76 property crimes for first four months of the year in 2007, 59 in 2008 and 78 in 2009. Burglaries and theftsboth increased dramatically for the first four months of this year over last year.
    • The number of burglaries in Borderstan for the first four months of 2009 was 12, up from7 in 2008 and 3 in 2007.
    • The number of thefts in the neighborhood for the January-April period increased by 45% from last year–to 29 this year from 20 in 2008 (and 21 in 2007).
    • Auto crimes in Borderstan were also up for the first four months of the year. There were 27 thefts from autos compared in 26 in 2008 (still far below the 46 for the same period in 2007).
    • The number stolen autos rose noticeably over last year for the period, to 10 from 6 each of the two previous years.
