PSA 208: YTD Crime Stats, January-April

Here are the year-to-date (January 1 through April 30) crime stats for Police Service Area (PSA) 208 for the last three years: 2007, 2008 and 2009. PSA 208 encompasses the Dupont Circle neighborhood and part of the Kalorama Circle area. West Borderstan (west of 15th Street) is in PSA 208.

Overall, total crime for the first four months of the year in PSA 208 edged up 5% in 2009 after rising about 2% in 2008. There were 712 total crimes in 2009, up from 677 in 2008 and 660 in 2007 for the same period. Total crime has risen 8% over the past two years for the January-April period in PSA 208.

Noticeable Trends in PSA 208, January-April

  • Overall, the total number of violent crimes was almost exactly the same as last year for the January-April period: 81 in 2009 versus 79 in 2008 and 71 in 2007. However, this is a 14% increase in two years in violent crime.
    • The most disturbing statistic for this four-month period in PSA 208 is the increase in gun crimes. The number of gun crimes doubled to 18 for the period year over year; there were 13 in 2007 for the first four months of the year.
    • Robberies (with and without a gun) also increased, but not as much–there were 55 in 2008 and 58 this year. Still, the 58 robberies is a 23% increase from the first four months of 2007 when there were 47 robberies.
    • The number of assaults has been consistent over the past two years for the January-April period: 20 in 2007, 23 in 2008 and 22 in 2009.
  • The number of total property crimes in PSA 208 rose about 6% for the January-April period–from 598 property crimes in the first four months of 2008 to 631 in the same period of 2009; there were 589 property crimes for the first four months of 2007. Overall, property crimesare up 7% in PSA 208 over the past two years.
    • The number of burglaries has remained almost exactly the same over the past two years for the January-April period: 47 in 2007, 50 in 2008 and 48 in 2009.
    • Thefts were also almost exactly the same for the first four months of this year (310) compared to 2008 (309). There were 289 thefts in 2007.
    • But, thefts from autos were up fairly dramatically for the January-April period of 2009 (240) over 2008 (202), a 19% increase. There were 205 thefts from autos in the same period of 2007.
    • There were 2 fewer stolen autos in PSA 208 for the first four months of the year in 2009 (34) compared to 2008 (36). This compares to 48 stolen autos for the January-April period of 2007, a 29% decrease in two years.
