PSA 307: YTD Crime Stats, January-April
Here are the year-to-date (January 1 through April 30) crime stats for Police Service Area (PSA) 307 for 2007, 2008 and 2009.Generally, PSA 307 encompasses the Logan Circle neighborhood and parts of Shaw. East Borderstan is part of PSA 307 (from 14th to 15th and P to S Streets NW). West Borderstan (15th to 16th Streets) is part of PSA 208.
Total crime in PSA 307 rose 11% over last year for the first four months of the year–after falling 14% last year. There were 315 crimes in 2009, compared to 284 in 2008 and 331 in 2007. What drove the increase? Violent crime rose slightly, but the big increase was in property crimes.
Noticeable Trends in PSA 307, January-April
- Overall violent crimein PSA 307 for the first three months was up 7% year over year.
- However, with the number of gun crimes doubled from 5 in 2008 to 10 this year. For the January-April period of 2007, there were also 10 gun crimes.
- The number of assaults (with a gun or a dangerous weapon) increased to 15 for the period after holding steady at 13 for the first four months of both 2007 and 2008.
- The number of robberies (with and without a gun) increased for the first four months of 2009 after dropping slightly last year. There were 30 robberies in the January-April period this year compared with 28 in 2008 and 33 in 2007.
- In terms of property crimesin PSA 307, the number increased almost 12% to 270 such crimes for the January-April period of this year, compared to 242 in 2008–still far below the 281 property crimes for the first four months of 2007.
- Thefts shot up 46% in 2009 from 2008 for the first four months of the year, from 65 to 95–after dropping from 83 in 2007.
- However, thefts from autos actually dropped slightly to 128 in 2009 from 131 in the January-April period in 2008. There were 141 such crimes during the same period in 2007.
- The number of stolen autos for the period increased again. There were 27 stolen autos for the January-April period of 2009 compared to 22 in 2008 and 16 in 2007–a 69% increase in two years in stolen autos in PSA 307.
- The number of burglaries in PSA 307 declined for the January-April period for the second consecutive year. There were 40 burglaries for this period in PSA 307 in 2007, 24 in 2008 and 20 in 2009. This is a 50% decrease in two years in burglaries.
