Borderstan: Violent Crime Up Slightly in July After June Dip

This map, from the Metropolitan Police Department crime database, shows the location of violent crimes in the May through July 2009 period in the Borderstan crime area¹. There were 16 violent crimes in May, 4 in June and 8 in July. Violent crimes are robberies, assaults, incidents of sex abuse and homicides.
For the month of July, crime in the Borderstan crime area¹ was up from June. The main number was violent crimes, which increased from 4 in June to 8 in July. But, this compares to 16 violent crimes in the area in May, a bad month in Borderstan.
Property crimes held steady, with a slight bump up to 60 in July from 58 in June; there were 59 property crimes in the Bordestsan crime area¹ in May. Combined with violent crime, the total number of crimes in Borderstan in July was 68, up from 62 in June–but still below the 75 total crimes recorded in May.

The table at bottom gives the crime numbers for the past three months: May, June and July. Following is a brief analysis of the data in the table. All data is from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) crime database.
- Violent Crime. Violent crime in Borderstan was up again in July after dipping noticeably in June. There were 16 violent crimes in May, 4 in June and 8 in July.
- Gun Crimes. Gun crimes are either robberies or assaults that are committed with gun: 5 in May and 1 each in June and July.
- Robberies. Robberies with and without a gun: 14 in May, 4 in June and 5 in July.
- Assaults. Assaults can be with a gun or other type of deadly weapon: 2 in May, 0 in June and 3 in July.
- Property Crime.The number of property crimes has been steady over the past three months: 59 in May, 58 in June and 60 in July.
- Burglaries. After nasty spike in June, burglaries in the Borderstan crime area dropped dramatically last month: 2 in May, 10 in June and 6 in July.
- Thefts. The number of thefts in Borderstan doubled from June to July, after dropping in June: 18 in May, 12 in June and 25 in July.
- Thefts from Autos. A huge problem in Borderstan, thefts from autos were down noticeably in July from May and June: 34 in May, 32 in June and 24 in July.
- Stolen Autos. The number of stolen autos in the area has remained steady over the past three months: 5 in May and 4 each in June and July.

¹ The Borderstan crime reporting area (see map at top) covers a circular area that radiates 1,500 feet from 15th and Corcoran Streets NW–an area that runs from 13th Street/Logan Circle west to New Hampshire Avenue/half way between 17th and 18th Streets… and from Rhode Island Avenue/O Street in the south to T/Caroline Streets in the north. The Borderstan crime reporting area is divided between Police Service Area (PSA) 208 (west of 15th) and PSA 307 (east of 15th), with a sliver of PSA 305.
