Borderstan: A Look at July Crime Rate, 2007-2009
This map from MPD’s crime database shows the location of thefts-from-autos in Borderstan in July 2009. A huge problem in the Borderstan crime area¹, there were half as many thefts from autos in July 2009 as there were in July 2008, but still twice as many as in July 2007.
Total crime (both violent and property crimes) for the month of July 2009 in the Borderstan crime area¹ was down when compared to July 2008. There were, though, more crimes in July 2009 than in July 2007 due to a higher number of property crimes. We provide you with historical numbers in order to get some sense of the direction of the crime rate in the neighborhood. It is possible to obtain crime statistics from the DC MPD online crime database for up to two years.

- Total Crime. There 68 total crimes in the Borderstan crime area¹ in July 2009 compared to 88 in July 2008 and 59 in July 2007.
- Violent Crime. There were 8 violent crimesin Borderstan in July of this year compared to 10 last July and 12 in July 2007.
- The number of robberies (with and without a gun) decreased this year to 5 in July; there were 8 robberies in July 2007 and 7 in July 2008.
- As for gun crimes (robberies and assaults committed with a gun), there was only 1 in July 2009 in Borderstan, compared to 3 in July 2007 and 2 in July 2008.
- Property Crime.There were 60 property crimes in the area in July 2009. This compares to 78 in July of 2008 and 47 in July 2007.
- There were twice as many thefts this year as in July 2008.
- But the number of thefts-from-autos for July 2009 was half that of July 2008.
- Moreover, after a huge spike in stolen autos in July of 2008 (13), the number of stolen autos in July this year was 4.

¹ The Borderstan crime reporting area (see map above) covers a circular area that radiates 1,500 feet from 15th and Corcoran Streets NW–an area that runs from 13th Street/Logan Circle west to New Hampshire Avenue/half way between 17th and 18th Streets… and from Rhode Island Avenue/O Street in the south to T/Caroline Streets in the north. The Borderstan crime reporting area is divided between Police Service Area (PSA) 208 (west of 15th) and PSA 307 (east of 15th), with a sliver of PSA 305.
