UPDATED: Borderstan August Crime Up 37% From Last Year

UPDATE from editor: There are some important changes in the updated statistics in the MPD crime database for August 2009. For example, there were 34 thefts from autos for August 2009 in the Borderstan crime reporting area (not 24). Along with some other upates, this drives up the total number of crimes to 78 for the month. The text and charts have been updated to reflect this change.

Total crime (both violent and property crimes) for the  month of August 2009 in the Borderstan crime area¹ is 37% higher than in August 2008 and 15% higher than August 2007. Total crimes in August by year:

  • 78 in August 2009
  • 57 in August 2008
  • 68 in August 2007.

Historical numbers are provided to give you a sense of the direction of the crime rate in the neighborhood. (You can run crime statistics from the DC MPD online crime database for up to two years.)   • Total Crime. There were 78 total crimes in the Borderstan crime area¹ in August 2009 compared to 57 in August 2008 and 68 in August 2007. Percentage-wise, crime was up 37% last month compared to the previous year.

 

  • Violent Crime. There were were 11 violent crimes in Borderstan in August of this year compared to 6 in August 2008 and 10 in August  2007. This is an 83-percent increase over last August.
    • The number of robberies (with and without a gun) is higher than in previous years: there were 11 robberies in August 2009 compared to 4 in August 2008 and 8 in August 2007.
    • Gun crimes (robberies and assaults committed with a gun) are up: 4 in August of this year, 1 in August 2008 and 2 in August 2007.
    • Assault with a dangerous weapon (with and without a gun): There were 0 assaults in August 2009 compared to 2 in August 2008 and 2 in August 2007.
  • Property Crime. There were 67 property crimes in the area in August 2009, a 31-percent increase from the 51 property crimes in 2008. There were 58 property crimes in August 2007.
    • Thefts from autos are higher: 34 in August 2009 compared to 19 in 2008 and 20 in 2007.
    • Stolen autos: There were 6 stolen autos in August of this year compared to 6 in August of last year and 2 in August 2007.
    • Burglaries: The number of burglaries in August of this year was 2, lower than the 4 last year and an unusually high 17 in August 2007.
    • Thefts: The number of thefts is higher this year than the previous two Augusts: 25 in 2009, 22 in 2008 and 19 in 2007.

¹ The Borderstan crime reporting area (see map above) covers a circular area that radiates 1,500 feet from 15th and Corcoran Streets NW–an area that runs  from 13th Street/Logan Circle west to New Hampshire Avenue/half way between 17th and 18th Streets… and from Rhode Island Avenue/O Street  in the south to T/Caroline Streets in the north. The Borderstan crime reporting area is divided between Police Service Area (PSA) 208 (west of 15th) and PSA 307 (east of 15th), with a sliver of PSA 305.
