September Crime Stats: More Property Crimes; Gun Crimes Up

The number of crimes in September 2009 in the Borderstan crime reporting area¹ is up substantially over the previous two Septembers, 2007 and 2008.

The rise is being driven by property crimes, mostly thefts (up 85% from two years ago) and thefts from autos (up 173% from two years ago).

While violent crime remained steady, the number of gun crimes is up noticeably–a trend we have been seeing all year.

Total crime (both violent and property crimes) for the  month of September 2009 in the Borderstan crime area¹ is 27% higher than in September 2008 and 61% higher than September 2007.

September: Year by Year

  • 44 crimes in September 2007
  • 56 crimes in September 2008 (27% increase over 2007)
  • 71 crimes in September 2009 (27% increase over 2008 and 61% increase over 2007).

Total Crime

  • There were 71 total crimes in the Borderstan crime area¹ in September 2009 compared to 56 in September 2008 and 44 in September 2007. Percentage-wise, crime was up 27% last month compared to the previous year and 61% over 2007.

 

Violent Crime

  • There were were 10 violent crimesin Borderstan in September of this year–the same as in September 2008 and 2007.
    • The number of robberies (with and without a gun) is has remained steady for September in the past three years; there were 9 in 2007, 8 in 2008 and 9 this year.
    • Gun crimes (robberies and assaults committed with a gun) are up: 2 in September 2007, 3 in September 2008 and 6 in September this year. This follows a trend we have seen this year in Borderstan. While violent crime may remain steady or rise slightly, gun crimes are almost always higher than in previous years.
    • Assault with a dangerous weapon (with and without a gun): There was 1 assault in September 2009 compared to 2 in September 2008 and 0 in September 2007.

Property Crime

  • There were 61 property crimes in the area in August 2009, a 35% increase from the 46 property crimes in 2008, and a 79% increase from the 34 property crimes in September 2007.
    • Thefts from autos continue to skyrocket: 30 in September 2009 compared to 21 in 2008 and 11 in 2007. In two years, the number of thefts from autos has increased 173%
    • Stolen autos: There were 4 stolen autos in September of this year compared to 6 in September of last year and 4 in September 2007.
    • Burglaries: The number of burglaries in September of this year was 3, lower than the 4 last year and the 6 burglaries in September 2007.
    • Thefts: The number of thefts continues to skyrocket, a pattern we have seen this year. There were 24 in September 2009, far higher than in the previous two Septembers; 15 in 2008 and 13 in 2007. Thefts have increased 85% in two years.

¹ The Borderstan crime reporting area (see map above) covers a circular area that radiates 1,500 feet from 15th and Corcoran Streets NW–an area that runs  from 13th Street/Logan Circle west to New Hampshire Avenue/half way between 17th and 18th Streets… and from Rhode Island Avenue/O Street  in the south to T/Caroline Streets in the north. The Borderstan crime reporting area includes parts of Police Service Area (PSA) 208 (west of 15th) and PSA 307 (east of 15th), with a sliver of PSA 305 in the northeast.
