Crimes of Note: Is 14th & R a New Robbery Hot Spot?

by Borderstan.com January 4, 2010 at 1:00 pm 4 Comments

Is 14th and R NW a new robbery hot spot? Of the 14 robberies in the area (list below the fold) between December 11 and January 3, four were at 14th and R NW or on the 1400 block of R Street NW. Three of the four robberies were with a gun.

During the first 11 months of 2009, there were only five robberies (four with a gun) within a 500-foot radius of 14th and R NW–and only two of those robberies were at 14th and R or on the 1400 block of R Streets. Since December 1 there have been at least four at this address (listed below the fold).

3D Commander Jacob Kishter, “We are aware of the crimes in the area are in the process of deploying resources in the area to combat them. The lieutenants from [Police Service Areas] 208 and 307 will step up their cross border patrols and information sharing. Besides uniform patrols, we have started using plainclothes ‘Robbery Tact’ officers to deploy to these areas.”

Also… do not live under the illusion that you are automatically safe from robbery or assault on U Street because it is a busy area, particularly late at night (the same applies to the surrounding side streets). Crime happens there; the four robberies and assaults listed below are not unusual. There are always lots of people out and about, going to clubs and restaurants. Robbers know that people will have money and valuables with them.

Following are crimes of note in the Borderstan area in Dupont, U Street and Logan. Crimes of note are property crimes such as stolen autos and burglaries, and violent crimes such as robberies and assaults.

Haven’t there been issues on that block over the years between the owners of the apartment buildings on the south side and the buildings on the north side? Are those city-owned buildings on the south side? Do the police think there is a connection?

  • d

It is highly doubtful that residents living in those apartment buildings are committing these crimes. In fact, it is when fewer residents are “hanging out” on the sidewalk in front of the buildings that most of the robberies seem to be happening. Hired “security” in recent months has seemed to be as much a part of the problem as the solution. Active police presence, not just driving by on their cellphones, will help.

I would agree that the residents on the south side of the 1400 block of R are not the issue. Rather, it is a dense block, with insufficient police coverage. At a meeting with the police two months ago we asked them to move the security camera to a better location (out from behind the tree where it is now), and we were promised a follow-up. Despite sharing my e-mail address, no one ever sent anything out.

    • Do you think it is more of an issue of 14th Street now being a very popular place go go… so anyone looking to commit a robbery will be attracted to it?
