Wednesday at 15th and Church Streets NW: “Get a bag or a T-shirt.” (Luis Gomez Photos)

Employees of the DC Department of Transportation (DDoT) were at the 15th Street bike lane today surveying bike riders about the bike lane and how to improve it. If you took the survey, you got a T-shirt or shopping bag.

Does anyone know if DDOT is keeping track of whether or not cyclists are going the correct way in the contraflow lane? On Monday, there were a couple of city workers counting how many cyclists were using 15th and I asked them if they were keeping track of which way the cyclists were traveling and they said, “no.” Not sure how you can assess traffic patterns, usage, safety, etc., if you aren’t monitoring if the contraflow lane is even being used correctly. (This is neither an endorsement of the bike lane or an argument against it, just an observation.)
