Nellie’s Sports Bar Confirms 1:15 PM Gun Robbery Today

Nellie’s Sports Bar has confirmed a DC Police Alert that two armed robbers hit Nellie’s at 9th and U Streets NW this afternoon around 1:15 p.m.:

Nellie’s then confirmed the robbery and that a gun was involved.
Crime Stats: Large Rise in Gun Crimes
A quick check of MPD crime stats shows the following numbers for the area around 12th and U Street NW¹ for the past one year compared to the prevoious one-year period. As you will note below, the number of robberies in the area has gone down from 55 to 47–but the number of those robberies with guns has doubled, from 12 to 24.
In the meantime, the number of assaults has almost tripled from 6 to 17 on the U Street corridor, which includes surrounding side streets to both the north and south.¹
Combine assaults and robberies and the number of such crimes has increased from 61 to 64 in the past year, a 5% increase. The number of gun crimes (robberies and assaults with a gun) in the U Street area has increased from 12 to 28–a 133% increase. There was one homicide in each of the years in the defined U Street NW reporting area.
