U Street Area: April Crime Down from 2009, Higher than 2008

On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, total crime in the U Street area was down 38% in April from last year. There were 45 total crimes in April 2009 compared to 28 last month. However, the April 2010 is still noticeably higher than April 2008 when there were only 19 total crimes in the U Street area.

Declining property crime. The decrease in total crimes in April YOY was due primarily to the 38% in property crimes, which account for the huge bulk of all crime. The were 4 violent crimes in April of this year compared to 6 last year; there were also 4 violent crimes in April 2008.

The decrease in property crimes came primarily in the number of thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”), stolen autos and burglaries. But, there were more thefts from autos and thefts last month than there were in April 2008.

Violent crime down. There were 4 violent crimes last month–4 robberies, one with a gun. This is down from 6 violent crimes in April 2009 and the same as the 4 violent crimes in April 2008. There were 2 gun crimes in April 2008 and 2 in April 2009. Gun crimes are robberies, assaults and homicides committed with a gun.

The U Street Corridor crime reporting area (see map) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 12th and U NW–an area that roughly runs  from 14th Street on the west to 9th Street on the east and from W Street on the north to S Street on the south.
