17th Street Area: Stats Show YOY April Crime Decline

On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, total crime in the 17th Street area was down 35% in April from last year. There were 23 total crimes in April 2009 compared to only 15 last month. There were also 23 crimes in the 17th Street area in April 2008.

Detailed numbers below the fold are from the MPD Crime Database.

Declining property crime. The decrease in total crimes in April YOY in the 17th Street area was due primarily to the 37% decrease in property crimes. These account for the huge bulk of all crime–80% (12 crimes)of all reported crimes last month were property crimes, as opposed to violent crimes, which were 20% (3 crimes) of the total.

The decrease in property crimes was due primarily to the decreasing number of burglaries. The number of thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”), which declined to 6 last month compared to 7 in April 2009. But, the total number of property crimes in the 14th Street area is still higher than two years ago when there were 16 property crimes.

Violent crime stable. There were 3 violent crimes last month in the 17th Street area–all robberies and 1 was committed with a gun. This compares to 4 violent crimes in April 2009 and 6 in April 2008 for the area.

The 17th Street corridor crime reporting area (see map) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 17th and Q NW–an area that roughly runs  from 18th Street on the west to 15th Street on the east and from S Street on the north to O Street/Massachusetts Avenue on the south. The crime reporting is in Police Service Area (PSA) 208, which is part of MPD’s Second District.
