On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, total crime in the 17th Street area was down slightly from May of last year. There were 19 total crimes in May 2009 compared to18 last month, a 5% decrease. There were 23 crimes in the 17th Street area in May 2008, with the May 2010 number representing a 22% decline YOY in two years.

Declining property crime. There were 15 property crimes in the 17th Street area compared to 14 in May 2009 and 22 in May 2008–a 32% decrease in two years YOY. Thefts increased in May 2010 to 8 from the previous May while thefts from autos (smash and grabs) decreased to 4 last month from 9 in May 2009.
Violent crime stable. There were 3 violent crimes last month in the 17th Street area compared to 5 in May 2009 and 1 in May 2008. The big decrease YOY was in robberies. There were 5 robberies in May 2009 and only 1 last month.
