14th Street: Crime Down 66% in May YOY

On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, total crime in the 14th Street area was down 66% in May 2010 compared to May 2009. There were 15 total crimes last month compared to 44 in May 2009 and 25 in May 2008. Detailed numbers are below the fold and are from the MPD Crime Database.

April showed a similar, although less dramatic trend with crime down 24% in April 2010 compared to April 2009 for the 14th Street reporting area. For the past 12 months (June 1, 2009, through May 31, 2010), total crime is down 23% in the area YOY (compared to June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009); by category, violent crime fell 22% while property crime was down 23% for the 12-month period.

No violent crimes reported in May 2010. There were no violent crimes last month in the 14th Street area, compared to 12 in May 2009 (10 robberies and 2 assaults). This compares to two years ago, May 2008, when there were 4 violent crimes in the 14th Street reporting area (2 robberies and 2 assaults).

Declining property crime. The recent declines in property crimes in the area continued in May 2010. There were only 15 property crimes last month compared to 32 in May 2009 and 21 in May 2008. There were fewer types of all property crimes, but the largest decrease was in thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”), which dropped from 14 in May 2009 to 2 last month. There were actually few thefts from autos than there were simple thefts in May (which is unusual), with 9 reported thefts.
