Results of last week’s Borderstan reader poll.

Last week’s Borderstan reader poll asked, “Where do you work?” With 11 choices, readers could certainly be exact about their employment. What makes the DC area unique is the large number of people who do not work in the for-profit sector. If you add the 37% who said they work for a for-profit company with the 8% who are self-employed, you only get 45%.

A total of 25% work in government (24% federal, 1% DC). Another 23% are employed by not-for-profit entities, which includes the huge number of trade associations in the DC area.

The results:

  • For-profit company: 37%
  • Federal government: 24%
  • Not-for-profit entity: 23%
  • Self-employed: 8%
  • Military: 2%
  • Full-time student: 2%
  • Other: 2%
  • Unemployed: 2%
  • DC Government: 1%
