MPD Crime Database 17th Street NW Dupont Circle Borderstan

There were 23 violent crimes in the 17th Street area in the first six months of 2010. (MPD Crime Database)

Violent crime has edged upward, slightly, in the past two years in the 17th Street area while property crime has declined dramatically in the past year. The numbers are for the six-month period of January 1 through June 30. Comparisons are on a year-over-year (YOY) basis, i.e., the six-month periods for 2008, 2009 and 2010 are compared. All statistics are from the MPD crime database.

Overview

The number of violent crimes for the January-June 2010 period was 23, which compares to 21 in 2009 and 19 in 2008. The big drop in property crimes–mostly fewer burglaries and thefts from autos–is driving down the total crime rate. Total property crimes numbered 72 for the first six months of this year compared to 118 in 2009 and 119 in 2008; this reprsents a 39% drop YOY.

But, at the same time violent crime is up 10% from last year and 21% from two years ago. Robberies and assaults account for the vast majority of violent crimes. The number of robberies in the 17th Street area for the first six months of 2010 was almost the same as in 2009, but up from 2008: 19 in 2010, 20 in 2009 and 14 in 2008. Percentage-wise, robberies have increased 36% in two years in the 17th Street area.

As for assaults, the news is not good: There were 4 in the first six months of this year compared to 1 in 2009 and 5 in 2008.

Gun crimes are robberies and assaults (and homicides if there are any to report) committed with a gun. The news is better in this category: 3 gun crimes in the first six months of this year compared to 5 in the same period of 2009 and 1 in 2008.

As a result of plummeting property crime, total crime in the 17th Street area is down 39% from last year.
