Two good pieces on DC’s Advisory Neighborhood Commissions and their role in liquor licenses, voluntary agreements with businesses–and the expansion of Hank’s Oyster Bar at 17th and Q NW. The two posts: “Knee-jerk liquor license opposition undercuts credibility” by Dave Alpert of Greater Greater Washington… and read Ben’s post over at 14th & You, ““Voluntary Agreements” – Necessary or NIMBYism?” He gives a good rundown on what is happening at several different ANCs around the area with regarding to small business oversight and VAs. Try not to be exasperated when you read either article; it probably won’t be easy.
New local blog, danceDC. Check out danceDC, a new blog by Borderstan resident and contributor, Cecile Oreste. Oreste regulary contributes pieces on artists and the arts in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area. Now she has her own blog dedicated to dance in DC, including info on dance classes.
DC Number 2 for job-hunting college grads. The article at the Washington Business Journal about DC being the Number 2 metro area in the country for job-hunting college grads won’t be a surprise for our are. The Dupont-Logan-U Street area was a draw for college grads even before the recession hit–but with the availability of federal government jobs in the region, it’s even more pronounced now. The list is from Businessweek magazine. Note to candidates for mayor and council: What’s your plan to keep DC an attractive place for these desirable young transplants?
Is MOVA moving? Popular P Street gay club, MOVA, was the subject a rumor in the Washington Blade last week that it was closing. The owner of the club assured Borderstan that this was not the case. But they might be moving? Maybe.
Gray leading reader poll on mayoral race. You can still vote in the Borderstan reader poll on the DC mayoral race–on the Borderstan landing page, right nav bar. Fenty led until a Gray surge on Friday.
Who owns 113 abandoned and vacant DC properties? The DC Government is a larg owner of such properties–113 in all. Read Cary Silverman’s piece, “Home Again: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly,” at his blog, the Other 35 Percent. Silverman says that one-fourth are abandoned houses while the rest are empty lots. It’s a good, detailed explanation of the situation and what these properties mean for neighbors.
More speed cameras in DC. The Washington Post reported that DC is getting nine more “mobile radar cameras” at intersections around the city. But, none are in the Borderstan area.
