17th Street: Crime Down 49% in July YOY

There were 14 crimes in the 17th Street area in July, 1 violent and 13 property. (MPD Crime Database)
On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, total crime in the 17th Street area is down significantly from July of last year. There were 14 total crimes last month compared to 27 in July 2009–a 49% decline YOY. These numbers compare to the 31 total crimes in the 17th Street area in July 2008. Detailed numbers below the fold are from the MPD Crime Database.
Declining property crime. There were 13 property crimes in the 17th Street area last month compared to 25 in July 2009 and 25 in July 2008. Burglaries, thefts and thefts from autos (smash and grabs) were all down YOY. The biggest drop was in thefts from autos, a trend we have seen all year in the Dupont-Logan area.
Violent crime stable. There was only 1 violent crime last month in the 17th Street area compared to 2 in July 2009 and 6 in July 2008. The one violent crime last month was an assault (no gun) at 17th and Corcoran Streets NW.
The 17th Street corridor crime reporting area (see map) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 17th and Q NW–an area that roughly runs from 18th Street on the west to 15th Street on the east and from S Street on the north to O Street/Massachusetts Avenue on the south. The crime reporting is in Police Service Area (PSA) 208, which is part of MPD’s Second District.
