14th St Area: Robberies Up, Auto Crimes Down

There were six violent crimes in July in the 14th Street area. All were robberies, two of them with guns. (MPD Crime Database)

On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, total crime in the 14th Street area was down slightly in July 2010 compared to July 2009. There were 32 total crimes last month compared to 35 in July 2009 and 42 in July 2008–a 24% decline in two years for the month of July. Detailed numbers from the MPD Crime Database are below the fold.

Robberies drive violent crime up slightly. Due to a rise in robberies, violent crime in the 14th Street area was up in July 2010 compared to last July. There were six violent crimes in the area last month, all of them robberies. Two of the robberies–at 14th and P and at 12th and Vermont–involved a gun. In July 2009 there were four violent crimes (two robberies and two assaults) and three violent crimes, all robberies, in July 2008.

Declining property crime. The recent declines in property crimes in the area continued in July 2010, but the decreases were not as dramatic as in previous months. The number of thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”), dropped again last month when compared to July 2009 (see numbers below the fold). However, the number of thefts in July of this year was higher than the previous July.

which dropped from 14 in May 2009 to 2 last month. There were actually few thefts from autos than there were simple thefts in May (which is unusual), with 9 reported thefts.

¹ The 14th Street Corridor crime reporting area (see map above) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 14th and Q Streets NW–an area that roughly runs from 15th Street on the west to Vermont Avenue/Logan Circle on the east and from S Street on the north to Rhode Island Avenue on the south.
