Homicides Rare in Dupont-Logan-U Street Area

The major crime in the past two weeks in this area was the homicide on the 1100 block 10th Street NW. A man was found murdered in his apartment and police are looking for the killer.

The Washington Blade is following the story as the victim was a 34-year-old gay man:

“A 34-year-old gay man who was found stabbed to death in his D.C. apartment Monday night was last seen by friends leaving a gay bar over the weekend, said the city police homicide squad’s supervisor.”

A second murder occurred up in Adams Morgan on Wednesday, when a man was shot on the 1500 block of Mozart Place NW. We learn via dcist about a Washington Examiner story that says the murder victim had been in the DC Department of Youth and Rehabilitation Services: “Robinson had reportedly escaped from DYRS custody and was on-the-run at the time of his death.”

However, homicides are rare in this part of DC. During the past year (August 12, 2009 to August 12, 2010), there have been 129 homicides in DC (compared to 158 in the previous August 12 to August 12 period). But, how many have of the 129 homicides been in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area?

• For Police Service Area (PSA) 208, which serves the Dupont Circle area, there have been no homicides in the past year (there was one between August 12, 2008, and August 12, 2009).
• For PSA 307, which serves Logan Circle and part of western Shaw, there was one homicide in the past 365 days–the August 10 murder on 10th Street NW. There was also one homicide in the previous 365-day period.
• For PSA 305, which includes the U Street NW area, there has been one homicide in the previous 365 days–the May 28 murder of a Silver Spring man on the 1900 block of 9th Street NW. (There were four homicides in PSA 305 between August 12, 2008, and August 12, 2009).

By the numbers: In addition to the homicide, there were 13 reported robberies in the area, two of them with a gun (one is from early this morning). There were also 3 assaults, four burglaries and six stolen autos in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area between July 31 and August 10.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon

• 1400 block of U Street NW; Saturday, July 31.

Robbery

• 1700 block of U Street NW, with Force & Violence; Saturday, July 31. From MPD: “Between 1:30 a.m and 1:45 a.m, the complainant reports while walking eastbound in the 1700 block of U St., NW, he was approached by five suspects. One of them punched him about the upper body while the others kept a lookout. The suspects took an iPhone from the complainant and fled in an unknown direction. The lookout is for five black males, approximately 20 years of age. One of them was 5’9″ – 6’0″, 150 – 155 lbs, dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, wearing blue pants and a white shirt.”
• 18th and Church Streets NW, with Force & Violence, Sunday, August 1. From MPD: “At 1:45 a.m, the complainant reports while walking southbound on 18th street at Church St., NW, she was approached from behind by a suspect, who grabbed her arm and told her to give him her purse. The complainant gave the suspect her wallet, and he fled in an unknown direction. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5’5″ – 5’7″ tall.”at 1:45 a.m, the complainant reports while walking southbound on 18th street at Church St., NW, she was approached from behind by a suspect, who grabbed her arm and told her to give him her purse. The complainant gave the suspect her wallet, and he fled in an unknown direction. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5’5″ – 5’7”.
