Robberies drive violent crime up slightly. Due to a rise in robberies, violent crime in the 14th Street area was up in August 2010 compared to last August. There were five violent crimes in the area last month, all of them robberies. Two of the robberies–at Logan Circle and on the 1400 block of R Street NW–involved a gun. In August 2009 there were three violent crimes, all robberies and one of them with a gun. In August 2008 there were two violent crimes, one sex abuse and one robbery (no gun).

Property crime stable. The 28 property crimes in August were the same as in August 2009; this compares to 25 property crimes in August 2008. While the numbers were the same for the past two Augusts, there were big differences in the types of property crimes. The number of auto crimes–thefts from autos and stolen atuos–was down dramatically last month when compared to the previous August; this is a trend we have seen all year in the Dupont-Logan area. However, the number of burglaries and thefts more than doubled last month compared to August 2009 (numbers below the fold).
