On a year-over-year (YOY) basis, property crime has been falling in the Dupont-Logan-U Street area. This means that the number of property crimes recorded each month this year was almost always lower than in the same month of 2009.
However, this pattern has reversed the past two months: Property crime in October and November in the area has generally been higher than last year — dramatically, in some cases. This was the again the case in November with the U Street area¹ (see map).
The rise in property crimes was due to a big YOY jump in thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”). In addition, violent crime was up YOY in November due to a spike in assaults in the U Street area.
Borderstan’s U Street reporting area¹ (see accompanying maps) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 12th and U St. NW. The boundaries are roughly from 14th St. on the west to 9th St. on the east and from W St. on the north to S St. on the south. All crime numbers are from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Crime Database.
