17th Street: November Crime Unchanged from 2009
The number of crimes in the 17th Street area in November were almost exactly the same compared to November 2009 — and both were noticeably lower than November 2008.
While property crime has been rising on a Year-Over-Year (YOY) basis in the U Street and 14th Street areas recently (after declining for most of the year), the 17th Street area is immune to the trend.
There were 15 total crimes (violent and property) in the 17th Street area last month. This compares to 15 in November 2009 and 25 in November 2008.
The 17th Street Corridor crime reporting area (see accompanying maps) covers a circular area that radiates 1,000 feet from 17th and Q Streets NW–an area that roughly runs from 18th Street on the west to 15th Street on the east and from S Street on the north to O Street/Massachusetts Avenue on the south. Violent Crime
There was only one violent crime in the 17th Street area last month: a robbery (no gun). This compares to two violent crimes in November 2009 and four in November 2008.
Property Crime
There were 14 property crimes in the area last month, only one more than in November 2009. These numbers are down substantially from November 2008 when there were 21 property crimes in the 17th Street area.
Burglaires declined YOY to one last month from five in November 2009. However, there were more thefts last month (seven) than in November 2009 (three). The most common crime in the area is usually thefts from autos (“smash and grabs”); there were five last month.
