Three from 1 West Dupont Circle Wine & Liquor.

‘Tis the season for five bajillion holiday parties, New Years parties, office gift exchanges and the always-dreaded holiday cocktail party at The Boss’s house.

What’s a guy or gal to bring? How do you keep on your budget and still impress a crowd? Why, bring or give good booze!

My best buddy, Julian Mayor, is the sommelier at Bourbon Steak, so I asked him to walk around with me to the best Borderstan has to offer in wine stores to choose a red, a white and a champagne/prosecco/sparkling wine that is both a good deal and good quality.

Julian obliged, and we shall all benefit from his expertise!

Connecticut Ave Wine & Liquor Deli

One of each from Connecticut Avenue Wine & Liquor Deli.

He milled around choosing bottles while I snapped photos of the labels — because let’s get real, unless you’re a sommelier, those wine names make no sense and are barely pronounceable.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed in these stores – even with the super friendly and helpful staff (which all of them have!), shopping for wine can be intimidating.

So, what are your favorite wine and liquor stores in Borderstan? Any recommendations for stellar bottles that don’t break the bank?

Here are suggestions for a red, a white and a champagne from four different liquor stores in the Dupont-Logan area. Thank you, Julian!

  1. so dissapointed you didn’t include any local labels.

  2. Good point! Do you have any great recommendations?

  3. Great post! Taste tests or descriptions?

  4. Great post. Definitely going to try that Malbec from Cork and Fork!

This rocks. I am an idiot when it comes to wine. I almost never give it as a gift because I am clueless. I always have to have help from a friend when buying wine.

  6. Wonderful post, Alejandra. Can you do another one in the New Year with recs for more wines?

  7. It great to have some suggested wines that are reasonably priced. This is a nice starting point. I’d enjoy seeing a regular column, either monthly or every few weeks that profile a handful of wines available at our Borderstan shops – everything from the $12 bottle to a $100 bottle for special occasions.

This will help me select a few bottles for holiday housewarmings. Thank you!

  8. @wineguy I think the Kluge Albemarle Rose she mentioned at Cork Market is about as local as you can get. 😉

  9. Timely information on a variety of styles and prices. Thanks! Perhaps Borderstan can send you on a wine tasting tour. 😉
