The landmark Results Gym at 1612 U Street NW will be closing its doors at the end of the month after 15 years at the location. The tale behind the closing has been aired in many regional publications including the City Paper, Washington Post and Washington Business Journal. In a nutshell, the building where Results is located is owned by David von Storch, a local entrepreneur with his own health club chain, VIDA Fitness. With Results’s lease on the space ending, it was the opportunity for VIDA to take over. Bang Salon, also part of von Storch’s business empire, already occupies part of the ground floor retail space. (He got his start in 1992 with Capitol City Brewing Company, which has three locations.)

Once Results closes, the building will undergo an impressive $13 million renovation and expansion, and reopen as a VIDA Fitness. In addition to the gym and Bang Salon, an Aura Spa and restaurant will also be part of the complex. All entities are segments of von Storch’s Urban Adventures Companies, Inc. The renovation will also add a 60-foot rooftop pool complex that will be heated by re-captured heat from the HVAC systems.

The History of Results

Results owner Doug Jeffries first started a personal training business in a garage over the basement apartment where he lived on the west side of Dupont Circle. In 1994 he opened Training for Results, located in a townhouse at 1704 R Street NW, to accommodate his growing client list. Jeffries expanded to the U Street location in December 1996, setting up Results in a 25,000 square foot space that was part of the mixed-use historic building that von Storch had redeveloped earlier that year.

Von Storch excercised an option to purchase the building for $5.8 million in 2005. With the end of its lease looming, Results needed a new location. Jeffries, who also owns Stroga in Adams Morgan, told Borderstan that searches over the past few years for suitable locations in the surrounding neighborhood were unsuccessful. Some buildings that were on the list included the building that is now Room & Board at 14th and T Streets NW, the space above the Harris Teeter on Kalorama Road NW and the Central Union Mission building at 14th and R Streets NW.

The space at 1612 U Street has some features almost unheard of in an urban gym — high ceilings, expansive, uninterrupted floor space and large windows. The fitness-conscious joined right away, with membership peaking at 4,300 a few years ago. The E.B. Adams restaurant supply company had occupied the building for decades. At one time the building was home to the H.B. Leary Jr. and Bros. Chrysler dealership. Longtime residents will recall the now demolished car ramp on the east side of the property.

Work at 1612 U Street

Results U Street will remain open through February 28. The Bang Salon remains open until March 15. Two days later, on March 17, the entire building will be vacated as extensive renovations take place; renderings, updates on the construction schedule and a virtual tour of the new flagship VIDA Fitness are available through their Facebook page. VIDA will re-open in phases, with phase I (floors 1-3) and Bang Salon having a target date of May 31, phase II (floor 4) on July 2, the rooftop pool on August 9 and finally the restaurant in spring 2012. von Storch told Borderstan the restaurant will likely be a variation on a restaurant concept he has in the works at 901 9th Street NW, but slightly less formal, with more of a lounge feel.

Current Results members may continue their memberships at the Downtown or Capitol Hill locations. Results members who terminated their membership and joined VIDA Fitness as new members have been given the option to use any one of the three other VIDA Fitness locations for the same rate as their one-location membership. Von Storch is very optimistic of reaching his goal of 1,500 members by opening day in May. They currently have more than 1,200 members with 70% coming from Results. “We are already getting a tremendous response from people who live in the neighborhood but do not currently go to this location for their fitness and wellness needs,” said von Storch.

Full disclosure: The author was a member of Results for over 10 years and recently joined VIDA Fitness.

  1. My name is Kori Kamradt and I’m the communications director for Balance Gym. We want to offer any Borderstan readers from Results who may be looking for a new gym 50% off their enrollment! Just mention that you saw this comment on Borderstan!

  2. I am going to miss Results on U. It was a GYM. A very nice gym, to be sure. But it was a gym — not a marble and granite palace. You always knew that Doug’s priorities were right.

  3. I still cannot figure out why one of the local chains has not opened a gym on the eastern end of U Street. There is nothing down in our area, 9th Street. What gives? Wouldn’t this be a huge market for Washington Sports, Results or VIDA?

  4. I would say the same thing about the 14th Street corridor. Other than the small below U Street, there aren’t any larger, affordable gyms until you get up to Columbia Heights where Washington Sports has one. With all the huge new apartment-condo buildings on that stretch, I have to think the big gyms are looking at real estate there.

  5. Doug has lost 2 of his gyms, one has to wonder why but his business practices have been well documented in the press (14th Street).I rather look forward to the switch of power to Von Storch throughout the city.

  6. He simply lost the lease on the U Street property as the owner of VIDA owns that building.

  7. This spells disaster for the Metropole Vida location. It’s already overcrowded and unpleasant. Now we have to deal with a temporary influx of new members from U Street? I might use that list of alternate gyms.
