BorderStyle: Summer Lovin’ Had Me a Blast

Hi there, Borderstanis. I know it’s been a while since we’ve chatted. That’s totally on me; I promise to be in touch more often. The last time we spoke, Alejandra Owens and I gave some tips on how to pack for the beach. But what about dress in the city? Since today’s officially the first day of summer, I’m gonna offer advice on what to wear if you happen to find yourself in the city over the weekend.
See Khelan’s column, Sun of a Beach (Or, What to Pack for the Holiday Weekend)
Traditionally, summer’s the most casual season. But casual doesn’t have to mean schlumpy, frumpy or dumpy. In other words, it’s time to retire those cargo shorts from the late 90s, the flip-flops (which really ought to just be worn at the beach) and the college tee with the pit stains.
Here are a few looks that are equally chic as they are comfortable in the balmy weather. BTW, just like the Beatles, I get by with a little help from my friends:
First up, meet David: embodiment of the preppy chic look. He wears a pink gingham shirt, J. Crew navy shorts, a Vineyard Vines Chicago Cubs belt, a Timex watch and Ray-Ban wayfarers.
Eric continues the preppy look, rocking the nautical striped V-neck by Levi’s (seamen are totally in!), slim-fit khaki shorts from H&M, brown leather belt from Banana Republic, leather boat shoes by Timberland and a bracelet that’s totes vintage.
Changing it up a bit, Neil’s got this modern California thing going on, which I totally dig. His funky monkey T-shirt by T. Rains, Garth Cabral shorts, Lacoste belt, Hugo Boss shoes and Dolce & Gabana shades make him just cool enough (or too cool?) for the DC streets.
Chris sports the hipster look with a Kate Moss t-shirt from Urban Outfitters, Levi’s 511 skinny cut-off shorts, Nike sneaks, Ray-Ban sunglasses and champagne by Dom (clearly his favorite accessory!).
Last but not least, yours truly – who’s basically bastardizing the aforementioned looks into something I like to call prepster chic. That is, a plaid shirt from J.Crew, slim cutoffs by Obey, navy boat shoes by Sperry Top-Sider, a canvas-band watch by Nixon and Ray-Ban Clubmasters.
I’d like to thank my very stylish friends for being good sports and letting me feature them in this week’s column.
That’s it for me this week. See you soon!
