New Exhibitions Opening at Lamont Bishop, Transformer

Two new exhibitions open this week at local galleries. At Transformer on P Street NW, “E8: Sculpture” with Oreen Cohen opens Thursday, July 7 with a reception from 6 to 8 pm. She is the first of three artists in the exhibition and her work will be on display through July 16. At the Lamont Bishop Gallery on 9th Street NW, “Thomas Canavan and Arijit Das: Paint, Canvas, Walls, People” opens Saturday, July 9, with a reception from 6 to 10 pm.

Overview: As the name suggests, this exhibit features the works of many artists who have contributed to Irvine during its stay at the 14th street location; this exhibit occurs amidst the impending move. Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts 1632 U Street NW 202.483.8600	Victoria Greising’s “Material Narrative,”is on display 24 hours a day in the front windows during renovations at the gallery. Overview: In this three-part installation Greising “intentionally uses garments that have a history — ranging from discarded, beat up t-shirts to shirts donated in memory of loved ones who have passed. Each article comes to her infused with a narrative, marks from its previous owner, and with unique material characteristics…” (Joan Hisaoka Gallery)

Opening Reception: Saturday, July 9 from 6 to 10 pm. Overview: Thomas Canavan and Arijit Das produce art that leaves much to the imagination, intentionally. In “Paint, Canvas, Walls, People” at the Lamont Bishop gallery, the artists ask viewers to pause and provide for themselves the experience they want to remember and enjoy. In this way, the artists hope to remind viewers that through imagination and reflection they can produce the entertainment they seek.
