The Trevor Project Raises $19,000 at Fall Event

The Trevor Project’s DC fundraiser on September 9 was a sold-out event, with 300 people enjoying a Friday evening on the top floor and terrace of Room & Board on 14th Street NW. The event, organized by the Project’s DC Ambassador’s Committee, raised $18,945 for the organization.
The event was in support of the Trevor Project’s “Talk To Me” Campaign for Conversation, in support of National Suicide Prevention Week. LGBTQ youth are one-third less likely to attempt suicide if they have just one supportive adult in their lives.
The Committee is a group of volunteers who meet monthly and are dedicated to helping raise awareness of The Trevor Project‘s mission of ending suicide among LGBTQ youth. They work with schools in the DC area to reach kids directly and raise awareness of the issue. The Committee also helps through volunteerism and fundraising to help The Trevor Project carry on their life-saving efforts.

“This past year, Trevor Project members were invited to participate in the DCPS LGBTQ Steering Committee, which has culminated in the creation of a comprehensive ‘Plan to Create An Inclusive School Community,’ which we are thrilled to report has just been approved!” said Celina Gerbic, who heads the Committee’s Education and Outreach Committee.
DCPS will be unveiling the plan in 20 pilot schools this fall, according to Gerbic. The Trevor Project also participated in training 140 DCPS social workers on LGBTQ issues earlier this year. A group of the DC Ambassadors Council have completed their Lifeguard Workshop training, allowing them to go into schools to educate youth on suicide prevention, and in May they participated in their first ever workshops with youth in the DC area.
The Trevor Project’s DC Ambassadors Committee is headed by Co-Chairs, Adam Marquez and Joff Masukawa, and consists of several committee teams. The Education & Outreach Committee is headed by Gerbic, the Policy Committee is by Travis Crytzer, the Communications Team by Kevin Roland, Justin Shine and Trey Davis, the Volunteers Committee by Tom Johnson, and the Fundraising & Events Committee by Chad Fleming. Nick Seaver serves as the key Facebook liaison for the DC Ambassadors Committee.
The event at Room & Board was chaired by Roland, food was provided by DC Ambassadors Committee member Susan Fallon of Blue Ocean Kitchen and fellow chefs, along with Whole Foods; music was provided by Gerbic’s band, Alternate Route. Wine and liquor were donated by Cobalt/Level One.
